Late last night, Sony Pictures Classic dropped the trailer for Pain and Glory from acclaimed director Pedro Almodovar. The film seems to be semi-autobiographical and premiered at Cannes to huge acclaim. The AV Club said it’s “a deeply intimate film that offers something like an up-close-and-personal look at the aging master, reminiscing wistfully (if only semi-autobiographically) on his own history.” The theme doesn’t feel too dissimilar from Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood, although one would assume it’s significantly less violent.
Antonio Banderas won best actor at Cannes for his performance and it seems to be unlike anything else he’s done. Pain and Glory will be at TIFF and NYFF before hitting NY/LA theaters October 4.
The Spanish-language film follows declining film director Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas) as he reflects on his life choices. He revisits encounters that happened in his past as his present life falls apart.
What do you think of the Pain and Glory trailer? Will you be go see it? What do you expect?
