Not sure what movie to see this weekend? We’ve got you covered. Here’s what’s new in theaters for the weekend of August 22, 2019.

Angel Has Fallen

Secret Service Agent Mike Banning is framed for the attempted assassination of the President and must evade his own agency and the FBI as he tries to uncover the real threat.

If we’re in the trust tree, I’ve never seen any of the Has Fallen series. It’s a big action franchise with mediocre to very poor reviews. But they make money, so of course they’ll make a third. Reviews continue to be mediocre with Angel Has Fallen, so one would have to think stars Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman and Jada Pinkett Smith are just in this for the paycheck. It’s gonna be a no from me, dog.

Pick of the Week: Ready or Not

Ready or Not follows a young bride (Samara Weaving) as she joins her new husband’s (Mark O’Brien) rich, eccentric family (Adam Brody, Henry Czerny, Andie MacDowell) in a time-honored tradition that turns into a lethal game with everyone fighting for their survival.

This is a peak 2019 movie and I’m all in on it. Weaving, best known for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri finally gets a leading role and the early word is that she crushes it. I’m in on any horror movie that has people hunting each other on a wedding night as a game. Both audiences and critics seem to be overwhelmingly positive about Ready or Not. Unless you’re taking young kids, this is the pick of the week.

Brittany Runs A Marathon

Hilarious, outgoing and always up for a good time, New Yorker Brittany Forgler is everybody’s best friend ― except maybe her own. At 27, her hard-partying ways, chronic underemployment and toxic relationships are catching up with her, but when she stops by a new doctor’s office to try to score some Adderall, she gets slapped with a prescription she never wanted: Get healthy. Too broke for a gym and too proud to ask for help, Brit is at a loss, until her seemingly together neighbor Catherine pushes her to lace up her Converse sneakers and run one sweaty block. The next day, she runs two. And soon, after finishing her first mile, she sets an almost unthinkable goal: running in the New York City Marathon.

Not into horror? Amazon Studios has you covered with Brittany Runs A Marathon. It’s another very 2019 film that Jillian Bell, Michaela Watkins, and Lil Rel Howery. As a New York City resident, this resonates with me and I personally can’t wait to see it. Bell is perfect for the role and has received a very positive reaction for the film.

And that’s what to see this weekend. It’s a light slate. We’re just over a week out from TIFF and the start awards season, so things slow down before they ramp back up.

None of these appeal to you? We’ve still got some good stuff in theaters from last weekend.
